Chippewas to compete at Eastern Michigan, Saginaw Valley State
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich.- The Central Michigan frack & field team will travel to two meets this weekend.
Â
A group of multievent athletes will head to University Center to compete in the Saginaw Valley State Jet's Pizza Invitational on Friday and Saturday, beginning at 11:15 a.m. on Friday.
Â
The remainder of the team will go to Ypsilanti to compete in the Can Am Classic, hosted by Eastern Michigan, on Saturday, Jan. 25 (9 a.m.).
Â
Individual Rankings
CMU's Nadia Williams ranks No. 3 in the country in the women's long jump at 21 feet, 1 ¼ inches.
Â
The Chippewas' Logan Targgart ranks No. 10 in the country in the men's weight throw at 69-5 ¼.
Â
Two Different Meets
CMU Director of Track and Field Jenny Swieton is sending the multievent athletes to SVSU because the Can Am does not have a pentathlon and heptathlon.
Â
Can Am
Saturday's Can Am meet will feature a variety of athletes from the United States and Canada.
Â
"I think the beauty of (this meet) is you can run off events," Swieton said, referring to events in which athletes may not typically compete. "You can run the 1,000 meter, the 600 meter, and the 300 meter. I don't know if we'll have a lot of people doing those off events, but those are the ones that the Canadians like (to run).
Â
"It's also good to see different competition with the Canadian athletes there because they have some really good student athletes."
Â
First Look
In addition to competing against Canadians, it will be CMU's first real look at Eastern Michigan.
Â
Eastern Michigan has been track & field powerhouse in the Mid-American Conference. The men's team has won 25 indoor MAC Championships.
Â
"I think it's just a matter of seeing where we're at," Sweiton said. "I'm sure they're similar to us in that everybody (on the team) is not competing. We're not going to see all their cards, just like how they're not going to see all of ours. Getting out there, getting used to the competitive environment, and doing what we can now (will help) so we can be successful late."
Â
Next
CMU will compete in its only home meet of the season, the Jack Skoog Open, on Friday, Jan. 31. The meet is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.
