Chippewas to take on FIU, Flagler in Miami
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The destination is the Sunshine State, but it's no R&R trip for the Central Michigan men's basketball team.
The Chippewas are headed to Miami to play Florida International on Tuesday, Dec. 1, and then Flagler College on Wednesday, Dec. 2. Both games are scheduled for the Ocean Bank Convocation Center; both carry a 7 p.m. tipoff.
CMU opened the season on Saturday with a 74-72 loss at Illinois-Chicago.
Guard Caleb Huffman, one of seven CMU student-athletes playing his first game in a Chippewa uniform, scored 19 points on 7-of-12 shooting to lead CMU. Travon Broadway Jr. added 15 points and Meikkel Murray, another newcomer, had 12.
Scouting
FIU is 2-0 with both wins coming over Flagler, 85-81 and 82-75. The Panthers finished 19-13 including 9-9 in Conference USA last season.
Junior guard Antonio Daye Jr. leads FIU in scoring at 22.5 points per game, while Radshad Davis is at 21.5. Davis, a 6-foot-4 forward, has made 10 of his 17 of his 3-point attempts (58.8 percent). He is also FIU's leading rebounder at 8.0 per game.
Last season, FIU led the nation with 210 blocks and 6.6 blocks per game. The Panthers were also 11th in 3-point defense, holding opponents to 28.8 percent shooting from long range, and total steals (280).
Flagler is a Division II school in St. Augustine, Fla. which plays in the Peach Belt Conference.
The Saints' Jaizec Lottie, a 6-2 senior guard who spent his first three years at Arkansas Little Rock, scored 29 and 30 points in the two losses to FIU. The first meeting between the two schools was considered an exhibition game by Flagler.
Point of Emphasis
The Chippewas hung in their opening-game loss to UIC despite making just two of their 18 3-point field goals and a subpar shooting night, both from the floor overall and from the free throw line.
Next
After the two-game trip to Miami, the Chippewas are scheduled to play just two more nonconference games before their Mid-American Conference opener at Western Michigan on Dec. 18.
The Chippewas are slated to play at Western Illinois on Sunday, Dec. 6, and to play host to Valparaiso on Dec. 12.
