Targgart sets meet record in men's weight throw
ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Quiara Wheeler won the women's weight throw and Erin Howard was first in the women's shot put on Friday to lead the Central Michigan track & field team at the Michigan Silverston Invitational at the U-M Indoor Track Building.

It was CMU's final tuneup meet ahead of the Mid-American Conference Championships, scheduled for Feb. 28-29 at Akron.

Wheeler, a junior from Flint, won the weight throw with a toss of 63 feet, 9 ¾ inches. Her throw measured more than three feet longer than that of the runner-up.

Howard, a junior from Lansing, won the shot put at 48-11.

The Chippewas got second-place finishes from Logan Targgart in the men's weight throw, from Kasey Staley in the women's pole vault, and from Hayley Manners in the women's long jump.

Targgart's weight-throw toss measured at 71-5 ½, a meet record. Staley posted a best vault of 12-8 ¾, while Manners' long jump measured at 18-6 ½.

CMU's Maya Bennett placed third in the women's weight throw (57-4 ¾), and the Chippewa men got a third-place finish from Emmet Smrcka in the 800-meter run (1:54.09).
