Baseball Tops Arizona In 10

TUSCON, Ariz. – Zavier Warren singled in the go-ahead run in the 10th inning and nine Central Michigan pitchers combined on a five-hitter on Wednesday as the Chippewas topped Arizona, 4-2, in a nonconference baseball game at the Wildcats' Hi Corbett Field.
It was the Chippewas' third-consecutive win as they improved to 6-2. It was the first meeting between CMU and Arizona.
Warren's single scored Zach Heeke from second to put the Chippewas up, 3-2. Heeke led off the 10th with a walk and then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Warren worked his way to third on a bunt and a wild pitch and then scored on freshman Zach Lechnir's two-out double.
Lechnir led the Chippewas at the plate with two hits, raising his average to a team-best .379.
Grant Frazer (1-1), the ninth Chippewa pitcher on a staff day, went the final 2 1/3 innings for the win. He allowed two hits and struck out one.
The Chippewas seized a 2-0 lead on Griffin Lockwood-Powell's fourth-inning two-run homer. It was the first homer of the season for Lockwood-Powell, a junior who last year led CMU with 11 round-trippers.
Arizona drew to 2-1 with a run in the fifth and then tied it with another run in the eighth. Frazer came on with two out in the eighth and induced an inning-ending groundout, stranding the potential go-ahead run at third.
The Chippewas kept the game tied 2-2 in the bottom of the ninth when Warren, CMU's All-American shortstop, threw out Donta Williams at the plate when Williams attempted to score from first on a two-out single.
The Chippewas are scheduled to play two games on Friday in Arizona, the first against Rhode Island at 3 p.m. and the second against the Wildcats at 8 p.m. CMU closes its trip to Tucson on Saturday (noon) against Rhode Island.
