Chippewas wrap up trip on Saturday
TUCSON, Ariz. – The Central Michigan baseball team dropped two games on Friday on its trip to Arizona, falling 9-2 to Rhode Island and then 5-1 to Arizona at the Wildcats' Hi Corbett Field.
The Chippewas (6-4) play their final game in Arizona on Sunday (noon) against Rhode Island.
Vs. Rhode Island
The Rams used a six-run second inning in building a 7-1 lead that the Chippewas could not overcome.
CMU got a run in the first inning when Zavier Warren doubled, took third on a bunt, and scored on an error. The Chippewas scored their other run in the eighth on a Zach Gilles sacrifice fly.
CMU starter Cameron Brown (0-2) gave up seven runs over 1 2/3 innings in taking the loss. Freshman right-hander Andrew Taylor allowed one run on two hits while striking out three over 5 1/3 innings. Tyler Hankins, a senior left-hander, worked the eighth, surrendering one run on three hits.
Vs. Arizona
The Wildcats scored two runs in the sixth inning to break a 1-1 tie and then added a pair of insurance runs in the eighth.
CMU got its run in the fourth on a Chase Rollin RBI single.
Chippewa starter Jordan Patty gave up his first run of the season on a fourth-inning sacrifice fly. Patty allowed three hits, walked four and struck out six over five innings. Patty, a junior right-hander, is 2-0 and has allowed six hits, struck out 19 and walked 11 over 19 2/3 innings. His ERA stands at 0.46.
Cameron Miller (2-1) relieved Patty to start the sixth and allowed two runs on three hits in taking the loss. Logan Buczkowski and Ryan Palmblad also worked in relief for the Chippewas.
At the Plate
Zach Heeke and Warren finished with two hits against the Rams, while Griffin Lockwood-Powell singled and doubled and Rollin had two hits against Arizona.
Next
The Chippewas return to action when they begin their spring-break trip to Florida on March 6 against North Florida. They are scheduled to play nine games in nine days, beginning with four against North Florida in Jacksonville.
