Chippewas Can't Capitalize, Drop Road-Trip Finale

TUCSON, Ariz. – Squandered opportunities can lead to frustration.
The Central Michigan baseball team left a combined eight runners on base in its final three at-bats on Saturday in falling to Rhode Island, 3-2, at Arizona's Hi Corbett Field.
The Chippewas finished 1-3 in their four games in Arizona and stand 6-5. They are scheduled to play nine games in nine days in Florida beginning on March 6.
CMU defeated Arizona, 4-2, on Wednesday and then on Friday lost to Rhode Island, 9-2, and to Arizona, 5-1.
"Obviously this weekend did not go the way we wanted it to," CMU coach Jordan Bischel said. "We played two well-coached teams and both outplayed and outcoached us.
"Every team has a rough stretch and seasons are defined in how you respond. I know we will be excited to get back to work back home. We had some very good individual performances and stuck together as a team. I know we will do all we can to prepare for our next series."
Rhode Island (4-4) scored all three of its runs in the second inning, collecting four hits in the frame off Chippewa starter J.T. Rogoszewski (0-1), who took the loss.
The Chippewas, who left the bases loaded in both the seventh inning and in the eighth, finally broke through in the ninth as Zach Gilles and Griffin Lockwood-Powell drew consecutive bases-loaded walks – with none out -- to pull CMU to 3-2.
Still with the bases loaded, the Chippewas grounded into a third-to-home fielder's choice for the first out of the inning and then a game-ending 4-6-3 double play. CMU collected nine hits, all of them singles, and stranded 13 baserunners in the game.
Ian Leatherman relieved Rogoszewski and kept the Chippewas in the game, throwing 4 2/3 scoreless innings. He struck out two, walked one and surrendered three hits. Grant Frazer allowed one hit and struck out the side in the ninth for CMU.
Zach Heeke, Zavier Warren, Lockwood-Powell and Aidan Shepardson collected two hits apiece for CMU.
