Chippewa Women 8th At MAC Championships

AKRON, Ohio -- The Central Michigan Track & Field teams finished up day two of the Mid-American Conference Indoor Championships with the men's team placing in fifth place with 34 points and the women's team placing eighth with 34 points.
Â
Eastern Michigan won the women's championship with 104 points edging out Northern Illinois, who had 102. Akron won the men's title with 165.5.
Â
"Obviously, were not happy with the places and the scores," CMU director of track & field/cross country Jenny Swieton said. "Regardless of whether you're rebuilding or not, you want to do better.
Â
"The only thing we can do is go out and give the best we have. Hopefully the people who underperformed are learning what they need to do to get better, and we're helping them learn that. And for the people that performed well, we hope they are even more fired up to perform better in the future.
Â
"There's a lot of people who had great performances, but we need more. I hope this meet showed them that you can (have a personal record) and you can still not score. If you want to score you have to step it up to the next level."
Â
Men's Results
CMU's Logan Targgart and Conor Covert placed third and sixth, respectively, in the men's shot put. Targgart's top throw measured 53 feet, 6 ÂĽ inches; Covert's best was 52-0.
Â
Swieton said the combination of Targgart, who on Friday won the weight throw, and Covert was one of the "biggest highlights of the day. Logan hasn't thrown that far since he was a freshman in college. So, that was a really big day for him."
Â
Also for the CMU men, Emmett Smrcka placed fourth in the 800-meter run, 1:51.98; Parker Aerts was sixth in the 60-meter hurdles, 8.28.
Â
Women's Results
CMU's Kasey Staley placed third in the pole vault at 13-ÂĽ, a personal best.
Â
"She just jumped phenomenally today," Swieton said of Staley, a junior. "Even at the next (height) she jumped really well. I feel like she's just as much of a highlight (as anyone) today."
Â
Erin Howard and Rebecca Herman placed seventh and eighth, respectively, in the shot put. Howard's best throw measured 48-11 Âľ; Herman's measured at 47-5 Âľ.
Â
Nadia Williams placed seventh in the 60-meter dash, 7.62.
Â
Heptathlon
CMU's Gavin Jaime placed sixth in the heptathlon. He won the 1,000-meter run in 2:45.86; second in the 60, 7.14; fifth in the 60 hurdles, 8.70; sixth in the long jump, 21-3 ¼; sixth high jump, 5-6 ½; sixth in the pole vault, 13-2 ½; and seventh in the shot put, 29-5 ½ inches.
Â
Moving Forward
Several athletes on CMU's roster competed in the MAC Championships for the first time Swieton said she hopes the experience was an eye-opener for her relatively young team.
Â
"I think it was good for them to get their feet wet, especially at a MAC meet, and just see what it's like to compete at this level," she said. "The MAC is a really tough conference, and if you're not on your A game, things are not going to go well. It was good to see the level of focus required to really do well at MACs, and hopefully that helps them focus at practice.
Â
"You have to be focused, ready, and engaged. I think that was a good experience for everybody to see the environment, feel out the competition, and bring their best to outdoor season."
Â
Next
Williams and Targgart will be head to Albuquerque, N.M. to compete in the NCAA Indoor Championships March 13-14.
Â
Targgart will be competing in the men's weight throw and Williams will be competing in the women's long jump. Williams placed sixth, earning First Team All-America honors, last season. Both rank among the top 10 nationally in their respective events.
