Mallory tosses 1-hitter as Chippewas earn doubleheader split
MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. – Shannon Stein hit two home runs and Cloe Mallory turned in a magnificent performance in the circle on Wednesday as the Central Michigan softball team defeated Quinnipiac, 5-1, in the second game of a doubleheader at the ROC Softball Complex.
Quinnipiac won the opener, 8-0.
The win in the nightcap was the Chippewas' third in their last four games as they improved to 4-3 on their spring break trip to Florida. They are 5-12 on the season.
Stein, a sophomore, hit a two-run homer to highlight CMU's three-run first inning, and then added a solo shot in the second to extend the Chippewa lead to 4-0.
Her homer in the first was her first of the season. She led the Chippewas in 2019 with nine round-trippers.
Mallory (1-4), a junior right-hander, held the Bobcats hitless until the sixth, when she surrendered a two-out home run. She struck out four. She set down the Bobcats in order in every inning but the sixth and the third, when she issued her only walk of the day.
Tala Dean and Gisele Acuña added two hits apiece for the Chippewas, who tacked on an insurance run in the seventh on an Acuña RBI single.
CMU had five hits, all singles, in the opener.
Kaitlyn Bean (3-5) started and took the loss. She allowed five runs on five hits, struck out two and walked two over four innings. Haley John worked the final three frames, surrendering three runs on four hits while walking two.
The Chippewas are scheduled to play Creighton (12-11) (2:30 p.m.) and Merrick College (2-10) (5 p.m.) on Thursday at the ROC Softball Complex
