Haley's two-hitter leads Chippewas to second-consecutive win
MADIERA BEACH, Fla. – Sophomore Haley John tossed a complete-game two-hitter on Sunday as the Central Michigan softball team closed its first weekend on spring break with an 8-0 win over Quinnipiac at the ROC Softball Complex.
The Chippewas finished their opening weekend in Florida with three wins and two losses. They are scheduled to continue their stay in Madeira Beach with a doubelheader against Quinnipiac on Wednesday, March 11 (10 a.m.).
The Chippewas collected a season-high 12 hits on Sunday. Their previous season high, 10, came in a 4-2 victory over St. Bonaventure on Saturday. Sunday's win gave the Chippewas (4-11) back-to-back victories for the first time this season.
"We had a great approach at the plate and executed with runners in scoring position," CMU coach McCall Salmon said.
John (1-3) struck out three and walked three. The game ended on the run rule after five innings. It marked CMU's first shutout of the season.
Gisele Acuna led the Chippewas with three hits including two doubles. She also drove in three runs.
The Chippewas got RBI doubles from Peighton Root, Shannon Stein, Tala Dean and Acuna in building a 6-0 lead through four innings.
Morgan Gardner and Root drove in runs in the fifth to end it.
"This team works hard every day and it's great to see that hard work come together on the softball field," Salmon said.
