KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- In an intense four-set finale, the Central Michigan volleyball team fell to Western Michigan on Saturday at the Broncos' University Arena.
Â
After dropping straight sets on Friday, the Chippewas returned to University Arena on Saturday afternoon with strong ambition, which allowed them to take the opening set, but succumbed in the next three.
Â
The Chippewas are 7-9, 1-3 MAC; Western is 12-4, 5-0.
Â
CMU discovered offensive struggles against WMU in Friday's loss, but also found windows of opportunity to utilize on Saturday, such as the offensive power of middle blocker Lisbeth-Rosario Martinez.
Â
By delivering the ball more frequently to Rosario-Martinez, who finished Saturday's match with 13 kills on 28 attempts for a .429 hitting percentage, the Chippewas were able to pull points together and claim the first set, 25-22.
Â
WMU caught on and shut down the plan for the remainder of the match, which allowed Savannah Thompson to step in and lead CMU in kills with 16 and in digs with 26. But CMU could not string together significant runs for the final three sets and fell, 27-25, 25-13, 25-20.
Â
The Chippewas are scheduled to go to Kent State on Friday, Oct. 8 (3 p.m.) and then go to Ohio on Saturday, Oct. 9 (2 p.m.). Both are MAC matches.
