Volleyball Outlasts Eastern In 5-Setter

YPSILANTI, Mich. -- After four sets of back-and-forth volleyball at the Convocation Center on Wednesday, Central Michigan reached for the gas pedal and pressed down -- hard.
The Chippewas' momentum rocketed forward in the fifth set against Eastern Michigan and laid the foundation for the second half of the Mid-American Conference season as the Chippewas took the fifth set, 15-7, to secure the victory.
CMU improved to 9-12, 3-6 MAC, and took a step forward after back-to-back losses to MAC West-leading Bowling Green last weekend. EMU is also 3-6 in league play.
The Chippewas won the first set, 25-18, and the third, 25-19; Eastern took set two, 25-20, and set four, 25-19.
The Chippewas are set to travel to Oxford, Ohio for a two-match series with Miami, which is 1-8 in league play, on Friday (7 p.m.) and Saturday (5 p.m.).
After dropping a pair to the Falcons over the weekend, CMU coach Mike Gawlik used the short time heading into Wednesday's match at Eastern to strengthen his team's on-court connection and communication.
"There were these really wonderful moments tonight where we played together," Gawlik said. "Set five was a culmination of that, there were moments where maybe we got away from that, but I thought we saw the fruits of connecting throughout the week."
Several Chippewa veterans answered the call at Eastern.
Anna Erickson filled in on the right side of the net, sharing the team lead with 13 kills with Sierra Gray. Gray also led in digs with 20.
Seniors Hannah Warners and Kendall Braate stepped in as libero and a setter, respectively. Warners finished with 15 digs, while Braate had 26 assists to go along with fellow setter Grace Butler's 27.
Lisbeth Rosario-Martinez contributed seven of CMU's nine blocks, three of which came in the fifth set.
"There's a lot of different ways that people can impact matches," Gawlik said. "Maybe it's different positions; you're kind of fully looking to fill the needs of what we need at the time.
"If you prepare every day to get ready for when your moment is called, you can step in and have impact."
