OXFORD, Ohio -- Fresh off a five-set win over Eastern Michigan on Wednesday, the Central Michigan volleyball team fell in three sets at Miami (Ohio) in a Mid-American Conference match on Friday at the RedHawks' Millett Hall.
The Chippewas fell to 9-13, 3-7 MAC, while the RedHawks improved to 4-16, 2-8. CMU will play a second match with Miami on Saturday (5 p.m.).
In the first set, which fell in favor of the RedHawks at 25-19, the Chippewas struggled in stringing together successful attacks. CMU had nine attack errors to Miami's one and was held to a .087 hitting percentage.
While the offensive struggles remained prominent in set two, the Chippewas started finding their groove. CMU bounced back after a Miami hot streak to tie up at seven, but attacking errors built up shortly thereafter and the RedHawks took the reins. The Chippewas rallied late and pulled together six of the final 10 points of the set, but a double block from Miami sealed the deal at 25-22.
CMU went ahead early in the third set with Savannah Thompson posting back-to-back kills to open. Four consecutive errors however sapped the Chippewas' momentum, forcing a CMU timeout with the Chippewas trailing, 10-7.
The Chippewas and the RedHawks battled it out closely and ultimately tied at 20 before Miami claimed the set, 25-22, and the match.\
Thompson finished with 14 kills and two aces. Lisbeth Rosario-Martinez, who also posted two aces, followed with nine kills.
Setter Grace Butler finished 22 assists, and libero Hannah Warners finished with 26 digs.
