KENT, Ohio – The Central Michigan soccer team played Kent State to a 1-1 draw on Thursday in a Mid-American Conference game at the Golden Flashes' Dix Stadium.
The draw left CMU 7-7-1, 4-4-1 MAC. The Chippewas moved into sixth place in the league standings, edging ahead of Miami (Ohio), which lost on Thursday at Northern Illinois to slip to 4-5-0 in league play.
The top six teams earn a bid to the league tournament.
CMU has two games remaining. The Chippewas play their home finale against first-place Ohio on Sunday (1 p.m.) and then go to Eastern Michigan on Thursday, Oct. 28.
Kent State is 10-4-2, 6-1-2 and entered Thursday's game tied for second place in the standings.
The Chippewas snapped a two-game winless streak with the tie.
"The players fought their hearts out tonight," CMU coach Jeremy Groves said.
Elizabeth Chlystun scored on a breakaway with just 37 seconds remaining in the first half to put the Chippewas up, 1-0. Kent State got the equalizer 15 minutes into the second half.
"In the first half we were very, very good," Groves said. "In the second half, Kent State came out, for the first 15 minutes, and kind of punched us in the mouth, scored, and then after that we settled down and started playing again. I knew that we would fight back."
It marked the sixth overtime game of the season for CMU. The Chippewas are 3-2-1 in those games.
"There's a lot of desire right now to win games," Groves said. "The team drove themselves to say, 'Hey, you know what? We're not tired and we're going to keep playing.'"
Kent State finished with an 18-15 advantage in shots, but the Chippewas held an 8-7 edge in shots on goal. The Golden Flashes had nine corner kicks to CMU's six.
CMU goalkeeper Allison LaPoint made six saves.
