Victory over first-place Ohio keeps Chippewas in mix for MAC Tournament
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The best for last.
Maria Kaschalk's free-kick goal in the 106th minute gave Central Michigan a dramatic – and critical – 3-2 Mid-American Conference double-overtime soccer victory over first-place Ohio on Sunday at the CMU Soccer Complex.
It was the first goal of the season for Kaschalk, one of seven seniors playing her final home game in maroon and gold on Senior Day.
"I don't think you can really ask for a better Senior Day," said Kaschalk, who has two career goals. "Three seniors get goals. Overtime win. There's really no greater feeling."
"The crowd was electric," said senior Riley Mann, who scored in the 86th minute to tie the game, 2-2. "It was a great environment to play your last home game in."
The win lifted CMU to 8-7-1, 5-4-1 MAC. The Chippewas are in sixth place, one point ahead of Miami (Ohio). CMU closes the regular season on Thursday, Oct. 28 (3 p.m.) at Eastern Michigan.
The top six teams in the league standings earn a berth in the conference tournament. If CMU beats Eastern, it clinches a tournament spot. The Chippewas could also get in with a tie or even a loss, but that would depend on how Miami fares in its finale on Thursday at Ball State.
Samantha Kaye-Toral, another senior, scored in the 15th minute on an Elizabeth Chlystun assist to put the Chippewas up, 1-0.
Ohio answered with back-to-back goals, the second of which came in the 84th minute and broke a 1-1 tie, giving the Bobcats (11-4-2, 7-1-2) the lead and the momentum.
Mann scored on a direct kick just over two minutes later.
Kaschalk's game winner came on a direct kick from about 20 yards in front of the net. CMU's Gaelle Wells drew a foul while battling an Ohio player for possession just outside the penalty arc.
Kashalk's shot found the back of the net, touching off an emotional celebration by her and her teammates.
"Off the foot, honestly, it did feel pretty good," Kaschalk said. "I was like, 'Oh maybe it will go in!' And then it did; it was great."
"It's huge to send (the seniors) out like that," third-year CMU coach Jeremy Groves said. "Since I've been here, all the seniors have committed to what we're trying to do and build here. Every day we talk about hard work and putting in the grind."
Ohio outshot the Chippewas, 15-13, including a 9-6 edge in shots on goal. CMU finished with six corners to the Bobcats' one.
Allison LaPoint made six saves in goal for CMU.
