CMU's 18-, 36-hole scores among very best in program history
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Another historic performance in a fall full of them.
Ashley Goh shot a 2-under-par 70 in the second round on Monday to lead the Central Michigan women's golf team at the Terrier Intercollegiate at The Carolina Country Club.
The Chippewas posted a 293 score in Monday's opening 18-hole round and then shot 299 in the second round. Their 293 is the third-best 18-hole score since the program's resurrection in 2014-15, and their 592 is the second best in program history for 36 holes.
The third and final round of the 54-hole, 17-team tournament is scheduled for Tuesday (9 a.m. shotgun start).
Goh's 70 ties for the second best 18-hole score in program history and, coupled with her opening-round 74, gives her a 144 total and ties for the second best since '14-15. The 18-hole record (69) was set in 2018 by Bria Colosky and the 36-hole mark (143) is held by current Chippewa Zoe Vartyan, who set it in February, 2021.
CMU is gunning for its fourth win in five events on its fall schedule. But the Chippewas, while clearly one of the better teams in the field, will have to make up a lot of ground in order to catch day-one leader Lipscomb and claim an unprecedented fourth tourney title this fall.
The Chippewas stand at 16-over and in fourth place, one shot behind South Carolina Upstate (299-292 – 591). Lipscomb set a blistering pace with an opening-round 281 and then followed with a 293 for a 2-under 574 and a six-shot lead over Eastern Kentucky (295-285 – 580).
Goh is among a group tied for fifth at even par, six shots behind Eastern Kentucky's Rylea Marcum. The field comprises 90 players.
CMU's Zoe Vartyan is tied for 14th at 3-over 147 after shooting 72-75, while teammate Padgett Chitty is tied for 18th at 6-over. Chitty opened with a career-best-tying 1-under 71 and then followed with a 79 for a 150 total.
CMU's Claudia Salvador is tied for 39th (76-78 – 154) and teammate Casilda Allendesalazar is tied for 48th (79-76 – 154). Allendesalazar eagled the par-4 ninth hole during her opening round. It was one of four eagles recorded by the field during the first two rounds.
