Chippewa Lacrosse Slugs It Out With No. 25 Vanderbilt Before Succumbing

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – A loss, yes. But Central Michigan lacrosse coach Sara Tisdale could not help but be impressed with her team on Wednesday, and its potential going forward.
The Chippewas overcame an early 5-0 deficit to tie the game four times before succumbing to 25th-ranked Vanderbilt, 16-10, in a nonconference game at the Commodores' Lacrosse Complex.
"For us being able to go toe-to-toe with a team that plays good lacrosse like that, it puts us in a good spot," said Tisdale, whose team is 1-1. "Overall, I'm really proud. The things that we need to fix are all within our control."
The Chippewas play host to Oregon in a nonconference game on Sunday, Feb. 28 (11 a.m.) at the CMU Lacrosse/Soccer Complex.
"I'll take a top-25 opponent any day," Tisdale said. "It makes our players more confident going into any opponent. We're excited to play Oregon on Sunday. We know our product is really good when you can play an opponent like (Vanderbilt) and go toe-to-toe. The game was very competitive. Excited for what's ahead."
Audrey Whiteside, Natalie Karlen, Courtney Burke and Maggie Diebold scored two goals apiece for the Chippewas. Kendall Hoyt added a goal and an assist, and Karlen finished with two assists.
Chippewa goalkeeper Sierra Savage made nine saves.
CMU scored the final four goals of the first half to pull within one, 6-5, at the break. Whiteside scored less than three minutes into the second half to tie it. The teams then traded goals and were tied 9-9 when Maddy Souza scored with 14:42 left to put Vanderbilt on top for good, 10-9.
The Chippewas were still within two goals at 12-10 with under five minutes to play.
"We executed our scout very well on defense and there was nothing that they did that we weren't ready for," Tisdale said. "Every goal that we scored came from something that we knew we could do -- looking for the second and third looks on plays. We've got to tighten things up a little bit and we'll be in a good place."
