KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – A good approach and a solid performance against a powerful program from the Southeastern Conference.
The Central Michigan softball team fell to Tennessee, 9-0, on Saturday in the Tennessee Invitational at the Volunteers' Sherri Parker Lee Stadium.
"The dugout was incredible yet again today," said CMU coach McCall Salmon, whose team opened the invitational on Friday with a 7-4 win over Northern Kentucky. "Our energy and our dugout's presence were outstanding. We felt that our dugout was able to prevent the other team from calling out or picking up our pitches."
CMU's second game scheduled for Saturday against Illinois State was rained out. The Chippewas (1-1) are scheduled to close the invitational and their season-opening weekend on Sunday (10 a.m.) against the Volunteers (10-1).
CMU collected five hits, all singles, in a game that was delayed for 45 minutes by rain in the second inning and then ended on the run rule in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Abbey Tolmie, Shannon Stein, Morgan Gardner, Tala Dean and Abigail Niehaus had the hits for CMU, which struck out just once against two Volunteer pitchers, including ace Callie Turner, who went four innings for the win.
"We need to keep making (opponents) have to make plays," CMU coach McCall Salmon said.
Kaitlyn Bean got the start in the circle for the Chippewas. She surrendered six runs on eight hits over 3 1/3 innings. Cloe Mallory went the final 1 1/3 frames, allowing three runs on one hit.
"(Bean's) presence on the mound was great," Salmon said. "She competed every pitch and was spinning the ball well. (Mallory) was spinning the ball well too, and was giving us her best with every pitch."
