GREENSBORO, N.C. – Different format and a different golf course.
More of the same for the Central Michigan golf team.
The Chippewas opened the North Carolina A&T Aggie Spring Invitational, a four-team round-robin match-play event, on Saturday with victories over High Point and Appalachian State.
CMU is scheduled to conclude the event, which is being played at Forest Oaks Country Club, on Sunday against the host Aggies. CMU opened the season with record-setting performances three weeks ago in placing fifth in the 12-team field at the Mid-American Conference Challenge in Lakewood Ranch, Fla.
"We played some really great golf today," CMU coach Jim Earle said. "Sometimes in individual matches that doesn't get you the win; that's the thing with match play. But everyone got a point for us today, which is huge."
The Chippewas won three of the five matches against both opponents.
Against High Point, CMU's Rachel Kauflin posted a 3 and 1 victory; Padgett Chitty won 1-up, draining a clutch part putt on the final hole to clinch the win; and Meghan Deardorff took a 2 and 1 victory. CMU's Ashley Goh lost 1-down and Zoe Vartyan dropped her match, 3 and 2.
"The girls were amped because they had such hard-fought matches in the win over High Point, which is a very good program," Earle said.
Kauflin completed a perfect day with a resounding 8 and 7 victory against Appalachian State, while Vartyan and Goh bounced back with victories. Vartyan won 4 and 2; Goh, 3 and 1. Chitty lost 4 and 3 and Deardorff dropped a 5 and 4 decision.
Kauflin, one of two freshmen in the lineup this weekend (along with Goh), "made the turn at 2-under par on an extremely long golf course," Earle said. "It was playing at like 6,300 yards. Her length isn't her strong game, but she came out and scored today."
