MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Central Michigan wrestling team will hit the competitive mat for the first time in three weeks on Friday (5 p.m.) when the Chippewas go to Cleveland State for a Mid-American Conference dual.
From there, the Chippewas will head for Buffalo for MAC duals on Sunday with Edinboro (2 p.m.) and the Bulls (4 p.m.).
The Chippewas are 2-2 in duals, 1-1 MAC. Cleveland State is 0-2; Edinboro is 1-0; Buffalo is 3-1.
Sunday's duals will be the last of the COVID-abbreviated season for CMU. The Chippewas will then begin preparation for the MAC Championships, scheduled for Feb. 27-28 at Rider in Lawrenceville, N.J.
"I think they just want to get back to a normal routine a little bit and get some matches in and try to get ready for the conference tournament," longtime CMU coach Tom Borrelli said of his wrestlers, who last took to the mat on Jan. 17, a 22-14 dual-meet victory at McGuirk Arena over Northern Illinois. "I think their bodies will be a little bit fresher and they'll be a little bit fresher mentally because the season hasn't been as much of a grind as normal. They certainly have had enough time to rest and train."
Four Chippewas are ranked nationally by flowrestling.com, led by 125-pounder Drew Hildebrandt and Matt Stencel (285), both of whom are fourth in their respective weight classes. CMU's Dresden Simon is 12th at 141 while Landon Pelham is 22nd at 197.
Hildebrandt and Stencel are ranked No. 1 in the flowrestling MAC rankings. Five other Chippewas are ranked in the top five in the conference rankings. They are Simon, second; Corbyn Munson (149), fourth; Johnny Lovett (157), fifth; Jake Lowell (174), fourth; and Pelham, third.
Just two of Central Michigan's potential opponents this weekend are ranked nationally by flowrestling. Buffalo's Derek Spann is 23rd at 141, and Edinboro's Jon Spaulding is 24th at 285. Both Spann and Spaulding were NCAA qualifiers a year ago.
Stencel defeated Spaulding on an 11-0 major decision in the 285 championship at the MAC Championships in 2020.
