Chippewas complete weekend sweep of Toledo, improve to 9-7
TOLEDO, Ohio – The Central Michigan volleyball team rallied from a 2-0 deficit on Saturday to defeat Toledo in a five-set Mid-American Conference match at the Rockets' Savage Arena.
The win gave CMU a sweep of the two-match weekend series as it improved to 9-7.
The Chippewas, who won Friday's four-set match with a solid, build-to-the-end performance, took a different route on Saturday. They came from way back to win, 13-25, 20-25, 25-20, 25-22, 15-7.
CMU trailed 7-14 in the third set, and then turned it around with an 8-1 run to forge a 15-15 tie. The teams then inched their way to the final tie of the set, 20-20. The Chippewas scored the final six points to draw to 2-1 in sets and keep the match alive.
"When you're down 7-14 and 0-2 in sets, you have a choice to make," CMU coach Mike Gawlik said. "We decided that we were going to keep groveling point after point without looking at the scoreboard."
The Chippewas amped up their service pressure; Lisbeth Rosario-Martinez was on the back line for the final five points, all but one of which came on Toledo attack errors. They also turned up the heat offensively, getting several big swings from Savannah Thompson, who finished with 19 kills on the night.
Sensing the swing in momentum and smelling blood, the Chippewas were quick off the jump in set 4, using an 8-0 run to build an 11-3 lead. The CMU lead was 24-17 when Toledo made a late surge, closing to 24-22 before the Chippewas ended it and sent to the fifth and deciding set.
In the fifth, CMU trailed 7-6, and then scored the final nine points consecutively to win.
"It wasn't the prettiest match we've played all season," Gawlik said, "however it's one that I'm proud of in the way that we responded to adversity."
Anna Erickson added 11 kills and Sierra Gray had nine for the Chippewas. Thompson posted a .255 hitting percentage as the Chippewas finished at .134, by far their season low in a win.
Megan Siversten had four kills and seven blocks and provided "a huge spark off the bench in sets 3, 4 and 5 both offensively and as a blocker," Gawlik said.
CMU tallied eight aces, tying its season high set in Friday's win over the Rockets.
Kendall Braate led CMU's defense and passing efforts, finishing with 25 digs.
