MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Central Michigan volleyball team heads into its final weekend of the season needing two wins, and a little outside help, to make the Mid-American Conference Tournament.
The Chippewas will entertain Miami (Ohio) in their series opener on Friday (6 p.m.) and are scheduled to close on Saturday (2 p.m.).
CMU (11-9) and Miami (11-8) are locked in a four-way battle with Kent State (12-7) and Ohio (10-7) for the final two spots in the four-team league tournament.
Regular-season champion Bowling Green and second-place Western Michigan have clinched spots in the tournament, which will be hosted by Bowling Green. Kent State has a .632 win percentage, followed by Ohio (.588), Miami (.578) and the Chippewas (.550).
For the Chippewas to make the tournament, it comes down to this: They must beat Miami twice and then hope that Ohio loses at least one of its matches this weekend at Northern Illinois or that Kent State loses both of its matches at Western Michigan.
The Chippewas have won their last two matches, both four-setters, at Eastern Michigan on Tuesday and at Ball State last Saturday. Before that, CMU dropped back-to-back five-setters, the first at home against Eastern and the second at Ball State.
CMU's Lisbeth Rosario-Martinez continues to lead the MAC with a .355 hitting percentage and she is tied for third in the league with 28 aces. CMU's Savannah Thompson is first in the league with 339.5 points and ranks second with 304 kills.
Miami ranks fourth in the league with a .234 team hitting percentage and third with 13.68 kills per set. The Chippewas are seventh (.204) in hitting percentage and sixth in kills per set (13.11).
