Softball Drops Twinbill At Miami

The RedHawks used the big inning in both games on Saturday in sweeping a Mid-American Conference doubleheader from the Central Michigan softball team at Miami Softball Stadium.
Miami won the opener, 11-3, and then took the nightcap, 8-0. The RedHawks scored five runs in the second inning in both games.
The Chippewas are 4-12, 2-5 MAC. Miami is 15-6 and leads the MAC at 7-0.
The Chippewas collected seven hits in the twinbill, one day after Miami pitcher Courtney Vierstra threw a perfect game in the opener of the four-game series. The teams are scheduled to close the series on Sunday (noon).
"Getting our leadoff runner on, after yesterday's perfect game, showed that from an offensive standpoint, we were committed to making adjustments," CMU coach McCall Salmon said. "We showed some good things, but we have to tip our hat to Miami because they consistently punched back against everything we showed.
"Offensively we just were not able to string things together. Tomorrow we need to bring all three facets of the game and great approaches at the plate. Our pitchers need to be consistent in the circle and we need to make the defensive plays. Tomorrow is a new day, and where there are outs, there are opportunities."
Shannon Stein and Kelsey Alexander each homered to provide the offensive highlights for the Chippewas in the opener. It was the second homer of the season for Alexander, the first for Stein.
Kaitlyn Bean (0-4) struck out three, walked one and allowed seven runs on six hits over 2 1/3 innings in taking the loss. Faith Howe allowed four runs on five hits in going the final two frames.
Shaidan Knapp, Abigail Niehaus and Tailynn Knapp had the Chippewa hits in the nightcap.
Cloe Mallory (1-1) struck out four and allowed 10 hits in taking the loss.
