Lacrosse Falls In MAC Showdown
3/27/2021 6:05:00 PM | Lacrosse
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Central Michigan lacrosse team dropped its first Mid-American Conference game on Saturday, falling to Robert Morris, 12-7, at the CMU Soccer/Lacrosse Complex.
Robert Morris improved to 7-2 overall and 3-0 MAC, taking sole possession of first place in the conference. The Chippewas are 4-5, 2-1. The teams are scheduled to meet again on April 24 at Robert Morris.
"We knew this was going to be a battle," CMU coach Sarah Tisdale said. "They are an experienced team and very well coached. We are excited to get to see them again in a few weeks."
The Chippewas committed 19 turnovers, a critical factor in the loss, Tisdale said.
"Nineteen empty possessions, 19 unforced turnovers, and (four) yellow cards that were retaliation for plays that we were not making," she said. "Those are all very controllable things that decided the outcome of the game."
The Chippewas led just once, 1-0, before Robert Morris scored four-consecutive goals for a 4-1 lead with under 15 minutes to play in the first half. The Chippewas never tied it, but twice drew to within a goal, the last time at 8-7 with under six minutes remaining.
The Colonials scored the final four goals of the game to pull away.
Tyra Prince scored three goals for the Chippewas, while Natalie Karlan added two. CMU goalkeeper Sierra Savage made 13 saves before leaving with an injury late in the game.
"It's hard to build momentum off of saves when we aren't converting those into goals," Tisdale said. "I thought our defense really stood up in the second half and gave us the opportunity to win, we just couldn't string it together. Jill Baldwin and Bri Hart did a lot for us today, clearing the ball and making some big plays."
The Chippewas will head to Kent, Ohio to face Kent State in a MAC game on Thursday, April 1 (6 p.m.).
