Patty Shuts Out Falcons, Baseball Splits Home-Opening Doubleheader

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Jordan Patty spun a gem in the nightcap on Saturday as the Central Michigan baseball team earned a split in its Mid-American Conference doubleheader with Bowling Green at Keilitz Field at Theunissen Stadium.
Patty (3-1) tossed a four-hit complete-game shutout as the Chippewas won, 1-0, after dropping a 3-2 decision in the seven-inning opener. The Chippewas are 15-9, 7-3 MAC. The teams are scheduled to conclude their four-game series on Sunday (noon) at Theunissen. The Falcons are 9-15, 7-6.
Patty struck out seven and walked two and worked out of his one and only jam in the eighth inning when he induced an inning-ending double play with two on and one out.
It marked the second-consecutive start that Patty has not allowed a run and he has not surrendered a run in 18 2/3 innings.
"At the end of six (innings), I thought he was going to go one more inning at most and then he had a really efficient, quick seventh, got in and out, so I thought we could stretch him into the eighth," CMU coach Jordan Bischel said. "In a game that looked like we were going to need a couple of innings out of our bullpen to finish it, it was pretty amazing he was able to get us to the end."
The Chippewas scored the game's lone run in the first when Mario Camilletti singled, Jakob Marsee walked, and Zach Gilles bunted for a single to load the bases. Camilletti scored when Garrett Navarra grounded into a double play.
Navarra hit a two-run homer in the first inning of the opener to stake CMU to a 2-0 lead. Bowling Green scored three runs in the fourth to take the lead for good.
Andrew Taylor (4-3) struck out nine, walked one and allowed five hits in taking the loss.
Navarra's homer was CMU's lone hit off Andrew Abrahamowicz, who struck out four and walked three.
Though the Chippewas lost the opener, Bischel could not have asked more from either of his starters.
"You'd just be splitting hairs if you looked for any flaws," he said. "Bowling Green, through the middle of their order, is very strong and we had a leadoff walk to lead into those guys in the (fourth) inning and they put a couple of good swings on the ball. (Taylor and Patty) really did a nice job all day."
Saturday's games marked CMU's first home date since May 18, 2019.
"I'd have to look at the roster, but there's a long list of guys (on our team) who have not been part of a home game at our field," Bischel said. "So for a lot of guys it was their first opportunity to play in front of our fans at a place they're comfortable. We would have loved to have had a better result in game one, but that's baseball and that happens. It's just nice to get an opportunity to hit second, that was the odd thing. We always hit first and I guess there is an option to hit second once in a while."
