BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Central Michigan golf team shot a 319 total on Saturday and stands in 13th place in the 15-team Bowling Green Dolores Black Falcon Invitational at Stone Ridge Golf Club.
The final round of the 36-hole stroke-play event is scheduled to begin on Sunday at 9 a.m.
Meghan Deardorff shot 78 and Padgett Chitty posted a 79 to lead the Chippewas, while Rachel Kauflin shot 80, Zoe Vartyan carded an 82, and Ashley Goh shot 88.
Playing as an individual, freshman Mackenzie Baustad shot a 4-over 76, the best score of the day by a Chippewas and is tied for 15th in the 86-player field. Deardorff is tied for 27th and Chitty is tied for 33rd.
"It was a young team making young-team mistakes all day long," CMU coach Jim Earle said. "Padgett hit the ball really well and she putted well also, but I think maybe it's a few poor club selections. She hit the ball good and it would chase through the green or find a bad lie or something along those lines. Padgett's been one of our most-consistent players throughout the year. She's got all the tools and she'll start putting it together.
"Meghan, she can bounce back. She had a couple of doubles out there and she didn't play the par 3s very well, but to get in with the low score out of the starting five just shows what some senior leadership and senior experience can do for you because she never gave up and I really appreciate that. She really fought hard.
"Zoe just didn't have her stuff today and she'll bounce back tomorrow. The day was set for Rachel to have a good round but she putted herself right out of a good round and she knows it; she'll be better tomorrow."
