MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Northern Illinois used a pair of big innings in downing Central Michigan, 11-0, on Friday in the opener of a four-game Mid-American Conference softball series at Margo Jonker Stadium.
The Huskies scored four runs in the third inning and five in the fifth. The game was called after five on the run rule.
The Chippewas are 4-19, 2-11 MAC; NIU is 12-21, 6-11. The are scheduled to play a doubleheader on Saturday (1 p.m.) Margo Jonker Stadium.
Caitlyn Britton singled and doubled to lead CMU's four-hit attack.
"We had a lot of loud outs, we hit the ball hard, we just have to string together some consistent hits and battle every single inning," CMU coach McCall Salmon said.
Kaitlyn Bean started and took the loss. She allowed six runs on four hits and walked four over 3 1/3 innings. Grace Lehto and Britton pitched in relief.
Bean survived a first-inning scare when she took a line drive to her facemask. She remained in the game.
"She could have given up there but she didn't," Salmon said. "She held strong, and I give her a lot of props for staying in there."
Winning pitcher Claire Norred struck out four.
