CMU holds a one-game lead over Cardinals in MAC standings
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Mid-American Conference baseball champion will not be determined this weekend.
But the result of the four-game series between Central Michigan and Ball State will be telling about who eventually will wear the MAC crown and represent the league in the NCAA Tournament.
The Chippewas and Cardinals open the series on Friday (3 p.m.) at Keilitz Field at Theunissen Stadium. They are scheduled to play a doubleheader on Saturday (1 p.m.) and close the series on Sunday (1 p.m.).
CMU, the defending league champion, stands in first place in the MAC at 20-4. The Cardinals are one game back at 19-5. Third-place Western Michigan is six games behind the Chippewas.
CMU is 28-11 overall and has won eight consecutive games, sweeping four-game MAC series over the past two weekends. Ball State is 28-12 and last weekend took three of four at Bowling Green; the previous weekend they swept Northern Illinois in Muncie, Ind.
The Chippewas and Ball State are at or near the top of the MAC in nearly every statistical category, both on the team front and individually.
