MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. -- Senior Abigail Niehaus has been selected as the recipient of the 2021 Beth Pawlak Award, the lone team award presented annually by the Central Michigan softball program.
The award began in 1998 as a memorial to former player Beth Pawlak, who was killed in an automobile accident during the winter of her junior season. The award is voted on by the team and recognizes the dedicated player whose leadership, hard work, and positive attitude serve as an inspiration to those she encounters both on and off the field.
An infielder from Grass Lake, Mich., Niehaus played in a career-high 26 games in 2021, making 20 starts at second base, totaling seven runs and 10 hits, including two doubles. She boasted a .985 fielding percentage, incurring just one error in 66 chances in the field. An excellent student, the Academic All-MAC recipient possessed a 3.94 grade point average, receiving a degree in leadership.
"Leadership, hard work and staying positive through any situation are all things that come to mind when I think of Abby," said CMU head coach McCall Salmon. "I am proud of her and everything she accomplished on and off the field while at CMU."
Recent winners of the Beth Pawlak Award include First Team All-MAC infielder Rachel Vieira (2019) and MAC Pitcher of the Year Rachael Knapp (2017).
