EAST LANSING, Mich. – CMU volleyball coach Mike Gawlik preaches that mature teams bounce back.
In the final set against IUPUI in the Michigan State Green & White Classic on Saturday, CMU held onto Gawlik's word and put up seven straight points to bounce back after the Jaguars' stood at set point.
The end-game deuce resulted in CMU's 3-0 victory over the Jaguars, 25-13, 25-21, 29-27. On Saturday night, the Chippewas fell in four sets to tournament host Michigan State, 25-17, 16-25, 19-25, 15-25.
The Chippewas finished 1-2 in the tournament and take a 6-6 record into their Mid-American Conference-opening weekend. They host Northern Illinois on Friday, Sept. 24, and Saturday, Sept. 25, at McGuirk Arena.
"I thought that's a pretty good sign of growth from our group," Gawlik said of his team's ability to rally in the third set against IUPUI. "I think a lot of teams sometimes get the feeling of, 'Alright, we're going to lose, let's start set four.'
"I liked the response as a full group: 'Let's win this rally and worry about the next one after that.'"
Despite the loss to MSU (7-2), which went undefeated in the tournament, Gawlik said he and his team can take pride in the energy and effort his team put forth during the fight, especially in a packed arena on enemy territory.
"Our confidence doesn't depend on the success of a small sample size of the last three or five minutes. That was a goal for us this weekend: We are who we are, whether we've scored five points in a row or whether we've given up five in a row, we can't forget that."
With standout performances from Savannah Thompson, Linnea Willer and Sierra Gray on the offense and Megan Sivertsen on the defense, the Chippewas were able to string together successful runs, leading to a 25-17 first set win against MSU.
While the fight remained strong, the final three sets led to a Chippewa defeat.
Thompson chalked up 21 kills for the day, 16 of which came against MSU. Gray followed with 18, nine of which came against IUPUI.
Sivertsen finished the day with seven blocks total, three solo and five assists, paired with 10 kills. Setters Kamryn Olson and Kendall Braate totaled 39 and 33 assists, respectively.
"We want to make sure that the way we play is irrelevant to where we play or who we play," Gawlik said. "One of our goals coming from this weekend is to come back home and mimic the same intensity even though the surroundings will be different.
"If we played this kind of volleyball with this kind of grit, intensity, confidence and looseness, we'll be able to do just fine in the conference."
