MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. -- In its third and final match of the Chippewa Invitational at McGuirk Arena on Saturday, the Central Michigan volleyball team cooked up a four-set victory over Youngstown State to finish the tournament undefeated.
The Chippewas claimed the first two sets over the Penguins, 25-12 and 25-23, before stumbling and dropping the third set, 23-25. CMU regained its momentum quickly and declared victory with the fourth set, winning 25-15.
"I thought we had good rhythm right from the start," CMU coach Mike Gawlik said. "Especially when you're playing at the end of a long weekend, two yesterday and one today, they cautioned us against having this lull of being like, 'Oh, we're fine, we're going to win;' and good teams bounce back."
Many Chippewas contributed significantly to the victory over Youngstown State, which came after CMU opened with wins over North Dakota and then Butler on Friday. Tournament Most Valuable Player Savannah Thompson led the charge with 13 kills; six other Chippewas amounted five or more kills.
"We were able to utilize our bench a little bit just to save some jumps for some people," Gawlik said, mentioning specifically the contributions of Sierra Gray and Hannah Warners. "When you can share the load a little bit on a three-match swing, you can save some legs long term."
CMU middle blocker Maddie Whitfield was good on 12 kills on 18 attempts for a .611 hitting percentage, paired with four blocks to earn her a spot on the all-tournament squad. CMU setter Kamryn Olson contributed 28 assists, and libero Aly Gurtiza finished with 20 digs.
CMU's Lisbeth Rosario-Martinez also earned a spot on the all-tournament team with Thompson and Whitfield. Rosario-Martinez hit at .444 with six kills along with three aces and two blocks.
Also named to the all-tournament team were Butler's Jaymeson Kinley and Melody Davidson; North Dakota's Maddy Nornyak; and Paula Gursching of Youngstown State.

CMU (4-2) is scheduled to play two matches at the Dayton/Wright State Tournament in Dayton, Ohio on Friday, Sept. 10. The Chippewas will battle against Wright State (3-2) at noon and then will face Illinois State (2-3) at 6 p.m. CMU is scheduled to conclude the event against Dayton (2-3) at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 11.
