MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Central Michigan student-athletes won 11 of 16 events on Saturday at the Chippewas' annual Jack Skoog Open at the Jack Skoog Indoor Track.
It was CMU's second and final home meet of the indoor season. Alma, Lake Superior State and Detroit Mercy also partook in the meet. No team scores were kept.
The Chippewas won five events two weeks ago in their Central Michigan Invitational.
"I think we've made huge strides since our meet two weeks ago," CMU Director of Track & Field/Cross Country Jenny Swieton said. "We had a lot of (personal records) again today and we debuted some people who haven't competed before, like Mohogany Wells and Emily Paupore.
"It was just an overall really great day. We had a lot of 1-2-3 finishes, we competed well, we got some good training out of it."
The Chippewas got double wins from Wells and Maddy Boyd. Wells captured both the shot put and the weight throw, and Boyd was first in the 3,000-meter run and ran a leg on CMU's winning distance medley relay squad.
Lauren MacDonald, Karlie Gardner and Haley Hegenauer joined Boyd in the relay.
CMU also got victories from Annie Laurenz, 400-meter dash; Jericha Petrella, 600-meter run; Paupore, 800-meter run; Anya Turner, mile; Peyton Korytkowski, 60-meter hurdles; Grace Williamson high jump; and Lindsey Clarke, triple jump.
The Chippewas now flip the calendar to February and look ahead to the Mid-American Conference Championships at Kent State on Feb. 25-26. CMU is scheduled to partake in two meets next weekend, the Notre Dame Meyo Invitational and the Grand Valley State Snowdown Showdown.
"If we make big strides at the MAC meet it's going to be together; that's how we're going to do it this year," Swieton said. "We have a couple people who might go in and score a ton of points (at the MAC Championships), but it's more everybody going in and scoring as many as they can, working for it and being scrappy and getting every point that they can.
"I think we've already shown so much growth over this season compared to last year. We're happy with where we are. Obviously, you always want to be in position to contend for a championship and I don't know that we're there yet, but we will be. This group of women will be there."
