MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Central Michigan baseball team is ranked 16th nationally in the Collegiate Baseball preseason poll.
The Chippewas, who finished 42-18 in 2021, are one of three schools from a mid-major conference in the publication's top 30 teams. No. 13 UC Irvine, No. 14 Louisiana Tech, and No. 29 Campbell are the others. Texas is ranked No. 1.
The two-time defending Mid-American Conference-champion Chippewas were selected by the publication to win the 2022 league title. Kent State was picked to finish second and Ball State was third.
"Both the preseason ranking and All-America recognition is significant and insignificant," fourth-year CMU coach Jordan Bischel said. "The recognition of the team and our individuals is a tremendous reflection of some amazing accomplishments by our student-athletes the last couple of years.
"With that said, the recognition is insignificant in that it will have no bearing on how our season plays out. However, it is an honor to be recognized among some amazing programs."
Several Chippewas earned individual accolades from the publication, led by sophomore pitcher Andrew Taylor.
Taylor, the reigning MAC Pitcher of the Year, was named to Collegiate Baseball's Preseason All-America First Team and was its preseason Mid-American Conference Pitcher of the Year.
CMU infielder Mario Camilletti was named by the publication as its co-MAC Player of the Year with Western Michigan's Connor Charping.
Chippewa senior pitcher Jordan Patty was named to the All-America Second Team and Camilletti earned a spot on the third team.
Four other Chippewas – Patty, Garrett Navarra, Justin Simpson and Jakob Marsee – were named to the 38-player MAC other players to watch list.
The Chippewas, who last season reached the NCAA Tournament for the second-consecutive season, open the 2022 season at Coastal Carolina on Feb. 19.
