MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Maddie Whitfield posted a .733 hitting percentage, finishing with 11 kills and four blocks as the Central Michigan volleyball team defeated Mid-American Conference opponent Miami (Ohio) in straight sets at McGuirk Arena on Saturday night.
CMU is 13-8, 6-4 MAC. Miami is 6-16, 1-10. The teams close their weekend series on Sunday (3 p.m.) at McGuirk.
"I thought we were clicking on all cylinders tonight," CMU head coach Mike Gawlik said. "We had a lot of people contribute in a big way for us tonight, our passing was good, our block got going, and we just did a lot of things really well tonight.
"We're going to have to rebound and play again tomorrow and I feel (Miami's) going to be better tomorrow, but we really played some top-level volleyball."
Whitfield set the tone for the match by opening the first set with a solo block, which ignited the Chippewas to a 7-2 lead, prompting the RedHawks' first timeout, and 23-17 at the second. Mallory Hernandez slammed the set-winning kill to finish it, 25-19.
The Chippewas and the RedHawks knotted the score 10 times in set two, the last at 14-14. A three-point run gave CMU just enough to step back on the gas, and the Chippewas claimed five of the final seven points of the set, winning 25-21.
CMU exploded for a 12-5 lead in the third set and extended it to 20-8. Though Miami scored seven of the final 12 points, Whitfield's 11th kill shut the door for the sweep, 25-15.
The Chippewas posted a.343 hitting percentage. Hernandez finished .550 with a team-high 12 kills and three blocks.
Freshman setter Claire Ammeraal contributed 29 assists and five kills on 11 attempts to end the match at .364.
Libero Aly Gurtiza finished with 15 digs and made two of CMU's five service aces.
Sunday's match is a special, sensory-friendly match for autism acceptance at McGuirk.
"Neurodiversity is a really important part of diversity on campus and in our community," Gawlik said. "There will be sensory-friendly places, (the McGuirk Arena media room) will be turned into a sensory room so if anyone at the game needs to take a break and get into a quiet space, we'll have this space. We'll have ear protection and be mindful of loud noises in the gym.
"It'll still be a Division I event, but it's going to be a unique event that I'm really grateful that we've leaned into with a personal connection."
