Softball Splits On Day 1 At Coastal Carolina

CONWAY, S.C. – The Central Michigan softball team opened with a win and a loss on Friday on the opening day of the Coastal Carolina Chanticleer Showdown.
The Chippewas opened the day with a 5-4 win over Maryland and then dropped a 9-3 decision to the host Chanticleers.
CMU (3-4) is scheduled to play North Carolina A&T (9 a.m.) and Monmouth (11:30 a.m.) on Saturday. The Chippewas close the tournament on Sunday (9 a.m.) against Dartmouth.
Freshman Alyssa Hollo continued her strong start to her CMU career with a fifth-inning RBI single that put the Chippewas in front, 5-4, against Maryland (4-6).
Kaitlyn Bean and Grace Lehto combined on a five-hitter in the circle for CMU.
Bean (2-1) picked up the victory, striking out two, walking two and surrendering four runs on four hits over 4 1/3 innings. Lehto went the final 2 2/3 frames for her first save. She allowed one hit and struck out three.
Shannon Stein hit a two-run home run in the third inning to put the Chippewas in front, 2-1. Stein later had an RBI double, Hollo finished with two hits, and Abbey Tolmie added a run-scoring single.
Coastal Carolina (7-5) scored five runs on six hits in the first two innings off Chippewa starter Faith Howe and never trailed in handing the Chippewas a 9-3 loss.
Howe (0-1) took the loss. Caitlyn Britton surrendered four runs on seven hits, struck out two, and walked four in 4 1/3 innings of relief.
Skylar Coberley hit a two-run homer in the first inning for CMU, while Tolmie and Lucy Cronin each singled and doubled. It was Coberley's first homer of the season. Stein had an RBI single to extend her hit streak to five games.
