Lacrosse Notches First Win In Home Opener
2/27/2022 5:56:00 PM | Lacrosse
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Courtney Burke scored four goals on Sunday as the Central Michigan lacrosse team defeated Butler, 16-11, in the Chippewas' home opener at the CMU Lacrosse/Soccer Complex.
It was the first victory of the season for CMU (1-2), which opens Mid-American Conference play on Wednesday, March 2 (2 p.m.) at Detroit Mercy.
Regan Martinsen had three goals and Hannah Potter and Sky Deprado added two apiece for the Chippewas, who outshot the Bulldogs, 29-21.
"Give the credit to our defense for executing our game plan," CMU coach Sara Tisdale said. "We identified that Butler liked to drive with a certain hand, and we really stepped up and took away what they wanted to do, which is great. Our transition defense really stepped up."
CMU seized a 3-1 lead six minutes into the game and never trailed. Three times the Chippewas stretched their lead to five goals, the last at 12-7 late in the third quarter.
Butler twice drew to within two, the second at 13-11 with under eight minutes to play, but the Chippewas scored the game's final three goals – two of them came from Burke – to pull away.
It was just the second game in a Chippewa uniform for Martinsen and the first for Deprado. Both freshmen made an impact, both on the scoresheet and otherwise, Tisdale said.
"Saw some new faces," she said. "Regan Martinsen and Skye Deprado really made a difference in that aspect. They kind of went out and played fearlessly and played lacrosse because they love lacrosse."
Erin Owens made seven saves in goal for the win.
In all, nine Chippewas scored and 10 registered at least one shot.
"I think we're very deep, we have a lot of players who can contribute," Tisdale said. "We're looking for our players to really lock in and buy into a game plan. It's really about trusting the process and that the game plan that we put on the table needs to be executed.
"For us it's really trusting each other, developing that chemistry. The last five seasons we had a core of people on the field that are gone and now we really need to find new leaders, that new trust, and that new vibe. Heading into Wednesday we're really looking for those leaders to emerge and that chemistry to develop."
