BIRMINGHAM, Mich. -- Three Chippewas finished with hat tricks on Wednesday as the Central Michigan lacrosse team defeated Detroit Mercy, 18-6, in the Chippewas' Mid-American Conference opener at the Seaholm High School lacrosse field.
Â
Audrey Whiteside, Maggie Diebold and Courtney Burke scored three goals apiece and accounted for one-half of CMU's goal total. Central Michigan (2-2) outshot the Titans, 35-19, in winning its second consecutive game.
Â
CMU put 29 shots on goal, tying for the eighth most in a game in the seven-year history of the program.
Â
"As a staff we kind of stepped back and gave (the players) the leadership reins tonight and they really stepped up to the plate," said CMU coach Sara Tisdale, whose team has scored a combined 34 goals in its past two games.
Â
Central Michigan never trailed, building a 5-0 first quarter lead in outshooting the Titans, 10-0. CMU led at halftime, 11-3, and 14-4 after three quarters.
Â
"This was a complete 60-minute game and it started with that strong first quarter," Tisdale said.
Â
Nine Chippewas scored at least one goal. Twins Kelly and Kendall Hoyt scored two goals apiece. Whiteside had two of CMU's nine assists.
Â
Erin Owens made four saves in goal in earning the win, improving to 2-2. Alexa Martel made one save in relief of Owens.
Â
It marked the Chippewas' third consecutive win over Detroit Mercy as they improved to 3-4 all time against the Titans. All three of those victories have come by double-digit margins.
Â
"Our goal obviously is to bring that MAC championship home to CMU, and it starts with performances like this," Tisdale said. "I think what you can expect to see is a team that really trust themselves and believes their game plan."
Â
The Chippewas go to Saint Francs (1-2) on Friday (2 p.m.) for a nonconference game and then entertain eighth-ranked Michigan (6-0) in another nonleaguer on Sunday (1 p.m.) at the CMU Lacrosse Complex.
