Softball Drops 2 At Louisville Bluegrass Challenge

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Louisville pushed across a run in the bottom of the ninth inning on Thursday in handing Central Michigan a 5-4 softball loss in the Bluegrass Challenge at Louisville's Ulmer Stadium.
The Chippewas fell to Valparaiso, 5-0, in their opener at the Challenge on Thursday. CMU (9-8) is scheduled to close the event on Friday with games against Indiana (10 a.m.) and Louisville (3 p.m.).
The CMU-Louisville game went to extra innings tied, 3-3. The Chippewas scored a run in the top of the eighth when Sam Souva, placed on second base to begin the inning under the tie-breaker rule, scored on a one-out single by Skylar Coberley.
Louisville loaded the bases against Chippewa reliever Grace Lehto with one out in the bottom of the eighth and then scored a run on an infield single, re-tying the game 4-4. Lehto then got a strikeout and a groundout to end the inning and send it to the ninth.
The Chippewas went down in order in their half of the ninth. Louisville's Easton Lotus began the ninth at second under the tie-breaker rule, took third on a groundout, and then slid in safely ahead of the tag with the winning run on a ground ball.
Lehto (4-5) took the loss, going the final 2 1/3 innings in relief of starter Kaitlyn Bean. Lehto allowed two runs on one hit, walked three and struck out two. Bean surrendered three runs on nine hits while striking out six over six innings.
Coberley finished with three hits and three RBI to lead CMU at the plate, while Shannon Stein singled and doubled.
CMU seized a 3-1 lead with three runs in the third on a Stein RBI double and a two-run single by Coberley.
The Chippewas managed just three hits off Valpo's Easton Seib in dropping their opener. Seib struck out nine and did not walk a batter.
Michaleigh Vallimont and Samantha Mills each doubled for CMU and Abbey Tolmie singled.
Lehto went the distance in taking the loss. She surrendered seven hits, walked two and struck out seven.
