Britton's 3 Homers Lead Softball To Sweep Of Akron

AKRON, Ohio – Caitlyn Britton hit three home runs on Sunday as the Central Michigan softball team posted a 7-5, 8-0 doubleheader sweep of Akron to close the opening weekend of Mid-American Conference play.
The Chippewas bounced back from an 8-2 loss to the Zips in Saturday's series opener.
CMU, 11-11, 2-1 MAC, is scheduled to play a nonconference game at Michigan State on Tuesday, March 22, and then is set to entertain Ball State in its home-opening weekend on Friday and Saturday, March 25-26, at Margo Jonker Stadium.
The Chippewas were outhit, 10-7, in game 1 on Sunday, but took advantage of 10 walks.
CMU scored two runs in the first inning on a Kelsey Alexander two-run single and then got three in the sixth as Britton homered with one out to put the Chippewas in front, 5-2. Shannon Stein followed with a two-run single to extend the lead to 7-2.
The Chippewas then added two more crucial runs in the seventh on back-to-back bases-loaded walks.
Grace Lehto (5-6) struck out 10 and allowed 10 hits in going the distance for the victory.
CMU's Kaitlyn Bean (4-4) struck out five and walked none in fashioning a two-hitter in the nightcap.
Britton homered twice to lead the Chippewas at the plate as they outhit the Zips, 10-2.
Stein led off the third inning with a homer and then Britton added a three-run shot to extend CMU's lead to 5-0. Britton hit a solo homer in the fifth. The game was called after five innings on the run rule.
Stein's homer was her eighth of the season and she shares the MAC lead with Karli Spaid of Miami (Ohio). Britton has five homers and is tied for sixth in the league.
The Chippewas have 23 homers through 21 games this season. They hit 31 in 48 games a year ago.
Leadoff hitter Abbey Tolmie and freshman Allyssa Hollo finished with two hits apiece for the Chippewas.
