Softball Drops Nonleaguer At Michigan State

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State collected nine hits on Tuesday in handing Central Michigan an 8-0 nonconference softball loss at the Spartans' Secchia Stadium.
The Chippewas (11-12) return to Mid-American Conference play this weekend when they entertain Ball State in a three-game series. Friday's game (3 p.m.) is CMU's home opener. The teams are slated to play at doubleheader on Saturday (1 p.m.). The Chippewas are 2-1 in league play; Friday's game is Ball State's conference opener.
The Chippewas collected five hits including a double by Shannon Stein and a triple by Kelsey Alexander on Tuesday at MSU.
Abbey Tolmie led off the game for CMU with a single and Stein followed with her double, but they were stranded when MSU starter Ashley Miller got a strikeout and two groundouts to end the threat.
Tolmie finished with two hits.
Kaitlyn Bean (4-5) went 4 1/3 innings in taking the loss. The junior right-hander allowed six runs on six hits, walked six, and struck out one. Maddy Wallace and Faith Howe pitched in relief.
The game ended in the bottom of the sixth when Michigan State's Catie Ladd hit a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 8-0 and invoke the run rule.
Miller (9-5) struck out five, walked two and surrendered five hits over five innings for the victory.
