WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Ashley Goh and Mackenzie Baustad finished tied for ninth on Tuesday to lead the Central Michigan golf team at the Kingsmill Intercollegiate at Kingsmill Resort.
Goh shot 78 on Tuesday in the third and final round of the 54-hole event, while Baustad carded an 82. Both finished with a 233 total. The field comprised 78 players.
The Chippewas shot a 317 team total on Tuesday to finish at 945 and in seventh place in the 14-team field. CMU opened with a first-round 307 and then shot 321 on Monday afternoon in the second round.
The Chippewas played without one of their top players, Casilda Allendesalazar, who missed the tournament with an injury.
"It was a tough course with brutal conditions," CMU coach Jim Earle said. "We feel like we're better than those scores. We haven't played well in bad weather yet this spring. And without one of our big guns in the lineup we just weren't able to overcome that."
Delaware closed with a 303 to win the tournament at 911. The Blue Hens finished nine shots ahead of runner-up William & Mary, the tournament host.
Also for the Chippewas on Tuesday, Zoe Vartyan shot 78, Claudia Salvador carded a 79, and Padgett Chitty posted an 82. CMU's Rachel Kauflin, playing as an individual, shot a 1-over 73 to finish at 234 and in a tie for 15th place.
Salvador finished with a 241 total and in a tie for 38th; Chitty finished among a group tied for 42nd with a 242 total; and Vartyan finished at 245 and tied for 46th.
Baustad opened the tournament on Monday with a 1-under 71, her career-best round, and she shared the 18-hole lead. She then followed on Monday afternoon with an 80. Goh shot 76-79 on Monday and her final-round 78 moved her from a tie for 14th into a tie for ninth.
"Ashley and Mackenzie both played great," Earle said. "A top-10 finish in this tournament is pretty good.
"Ashley has really sort of established herself as our top player right now; Kenzie's making a push. She hasn't played poorly at all this spring. She's been right there. She's just missed out in a qualifier by a stroke or for a tournament spot by a stroke and she earned her way into the lineup this week. I'm super happy for Kenzie."
Kauflin continued a strong spring season with her 73, which is just one shot off her career best. Nine of her 12 springs rounds have been in the 70s.
"73 today," Earle said, "that's a great score. Rachel's just tough and she'll be back in the lineup."
Delaware's Oihana Etxezarreta closed with a 1-over 73 to finish at 1-under 215 to capture medalist honors. She won by five shots over Emma Lu of William & Mary.
