Baseball Wins With 2 8th-Inning Runs

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Central Michigan baseball team scored two runs in the eighth inning on Tuesday in rallying for a 4-3 nonconference victory over Oakland at Theunissen Stadium.
The Chippewas improve to 32-15 overall. They open a four-game Mid-American Conference series at Eastern Michigan on Friday (5 p.m.). The teams will continue with a Saturday (noon) doubleheader before closing the series on Sunday.
CMU trails first-place Ball State by 1 ½ games. The Chippewas are 24-6 in league play; Ball State, which entertains Ohio in a four-game set this weekend, is 26-5. Eastern Michigan is 21-27, 15-17 MAC.
Adam Proctor doubled in a run with two out in the eighth inning to tie the score, 3-3. Proctor was lifted for pinch runner Adam Mrakitsch, a freshman pitcher, who raced home and beat the throw with a slide on a single by Justin Simpson.
Simpson led the Chippewas' seven-hit offense with two. He delivered an RBI single in the seventh to tie the game, 2-2. Jakob Marsee's third-inning RBI double gave CMU its first run.
Ryan Insco (1-1), the fourth of five CMU pitchers, allowed one run on two hits in the eighth and picked up the win. Jake Jones issued a one-out walk in the ninth then got a fly out and a strikeout to end it and earn his sixth save.
Ben Vitas and Aaron Husson also took a turn on the mound, striking out two each. Michael Conte made his first career start, allowing two runs on three hits over three innings.
