Marsee Hits 2 Grand Slams; Baseball Rocks Western In Twinbill Sweep

Jakob Marsee delivered two grand slams to lead the Chippewas' 33-run onslaught as CMU swept Western Michigan in a Mid-American Conference doubleheader at Theunissen Stadium on Saturday.
A 14-run first inning propelled the Chippewas to a 19-7 victory in the seven-inning opener and standout pitching from Garrett Navarra helped CMU take the Broncos to the run rule in the nightcap, 14-1.
CMU improved to 31-14 and 24-5 league. The Chippewas trail first-place Ball State by one-half game. The Chippewas were swept in a four-game series last weekend at Ball State. That weekend is a distant memory now as the Chippewas have totaled 44 runs on 45 hits in their three meetings this weekend with the Broncos (15-29, 12-18).
The teams are set to close their four-game series on Sunday (1 p.m.), and the Chippewas will play host to Oakland in a nonconference game on Tuesday, May 10 (3 p.m.).
"I thought we did a great job today in having good discipline and hitting approaches," CMU coach Jordan Bischel said. "Fourteen runs in the first, I don't know if I've ever seen anything like that, but what was remarkable about that is that I think we saw 90 pitches. … It was just great, disciplined at-bats and staying on good lines. We made every out hard to get which was really good to see."
Game One
CMU starter Andrew Taylor (7-3) struck out four across 2 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on five hits. Drew Alsobrooks, Michael Conte, Ryan Culley and Aaron Husson each took a turn at the mound in relief.
Down 1-0, the Chippewas sent 18 batters to the plate in exploding for 14 runs in the bottom of the first.
Marsee's first slam of the day highlighted the frame and the Chippewas scored 12 of their runs after two were out.
Drew Lechnir hit his second career home run in a three-run second which upped CMU's lead to 17-1. Lechnir's two-out, two-run shot came less than 24 hours after he hit his first career homer in CMU's 11-4 win in Friday's series opener.
Lechnir led the Chippewas' 15-hit attack with three hits and he finished with three RBI. Justin Simpson, Aidan Shepardson and Adam Proctor each contributed two hits.
Game Two
The Chippewa offense got off to a slow roll in the nightcap, but with left-hander Garrett Navarra (6-2) on the hill, it didn't matter. Navarra struck out a season-high nine – one shy of his career best -- over six innings. He allowed five hits and walked two.
"About as well as I've seen someone pitch for us," Bischel said of Navarra. "I thought Western had really good at-bats and battled him, every inning they put guys in scoring position, and he just executed pitch after pitch. In terms of executing pitches, that's about as well he can throw."
Ben Vitas worked the seventh (final) frame. The game was called on the run rule.
Mario Camilletti gave the Chippewas a 1-0 lead with an RBI single in the third, and then CMU upped the lead to 3-0 on RBI singles by Lechnir and Aidan Shepardson in the fourth.
CMU exploded for nine runs in the fifth to turn it into a rout.
Marsee, the Chippewas' sophomore left-handed hitting right fielder, ripped his second grand slam of the day during the frame. It was his fourth grand slam of the season and his sixth homer overall. He shares the team lead in homers with Danny Wuestenfeld.
Marsee has driven in 11 runs in the first three games of the series.
"You can hit 30 (homers) in a career and never hit (a grand slam), so I don't know how to explain (Marsee's performance)," Bischel quipped. "I just know that we better start loading the bases for him pretty often, because that's remarkable.
"It shows, as a guy who stays composed, he doesn't over-swing and just runs at the ball and hits it hard. I don't know if we'll ever see a guy hit four grand slams in a year again. It's unbelievable."
Lechnir again finished with three hits as CMU totaled 15 for the third consecutive game. Marsee, Camilletti, Wuestenfeld and Nick Dardas finished with two hits each.
