Volleyball Drops First MAC Match

TOLEDO, Ohio – The Central Michigan volleyball team suffered its first Mid-American Conference loss on Thursday as the Chippewas fell in four sets to Toledo at the Rockets' Savage Arena.
Despite leading in kills, aces, assists and digs, the Chippewas would only claim the first set, 25-19, before dropping the next three, 25-23, 25-19 and 25-20. CMU trailed in blocks, 11-3, and committed 32 attack errors to the Rockets' 21.
The Chippewas (9-5, 2-1 MAC) will conclude the two-game series with the Rockets (10-4, 3-0) on Friday (6 p.m.).
Kamryn Olson's back-to-back aces set the tone for CMU in the opening set for an early 6-3 lead, while outside hitters Natalia Rejment, Anna Erickson and Mallory Hernandez combined for 13 of CMU's 15 kills.
Toledo applied offensive pressure late in the set, scoring seven of the final 12 points to close the gap to 23-19 before Erickson and Hernandez made the final two attacks for the win.
The Chippewas struggled with attack errors in set two, tallying 11 to the Rockets' six. Toledo jumped to a 10-3 lead before CMU fought back within one point, 24-23, but eventually fell, evening the match at a set apiece.
The Chippewas would not find the lead again until the fourth set, forcing a Toledo timeout at 12-9. As CMU led, 15-11, the Rockets scored 13 of the next 16 points to reach match point, 24-18. The Chippewas fended off the final point twice before succumbing, 25-20.
Erickson tallied a season-high 17 kills along with 16 digs and two aces to lead the Chippewas. Hernandez followed with 12 kills while Elly Medendorp finished with eight.
Olson led the Chippewas with three aces and freshman setter Claire Ammeraal finished with 43 assists.
CMU sophomore libero Aly Gurtiza completed the match with a career-high 31 digs.
