Defending MAC champion Chippewas tabbed to win both the 2023 regular season and tournament championships.
CLEVELAND, Ohio—The defending Mid-American Conference champion Central Michigan Gymnastics team was picked to win both the regular season and tournament competitions, the conference announced on Friday afternoon. In a vote of the league's seven head coaches, Central Michigan earned a league-best 35 points and five first-place votes. The MAC poll can be accessed at this link.
The announcement comes one day before Central Michigan hosts its first exhibition meet of the season, the CMU Showcase, on Saturday at 2 p.m. at McGuirk Arena.
Last year, Central Michigan swept both the MAC regular season and tournament titles. In last year's MAC championship, CMU placed first with a 196.275 score, topping both Northern Illinois (196.125) and Western Michigan (196.075). The Chippewas tied for the league regular season title with a 5-1 overall record.
CMU returns MAC Gymnast of the Year, MAC all-around champion, and First Team All-MAC selection in senior Hannah DeMers, along with Second Team All-MAC pick Katie Kowalski. Both gymnasts earned NCAA Regional berths at the conclusion of the 2021-22 season. In addition, the Chippewas return a whole host of top performers and an impressive freshman class.
