ABOUT THE CHIPPEWAS
Central Michigan (5-5, 3-3 MAC) travels to Athens, Ohio to take on Ohio (7-3, 4-2 MAC) at Peden Stadium. The two schools meet for the 35th time in a series which began in 1972.
As Central Michigan's third midweek MACtion contest, the Chippewas find themselves fighting for bowl eligibility in a three-way tie for second place in the MAC West Division with Western Michigan and Northern Illinois with identical 3-3 records. Toledo is in first place with a 6-0 record, while Ball State and Eastern Michigan are tied for fifth place with 2-4 records.
After Wednesday, CMU's final regular season game is at home against Toledo (Nov. 24).
With five victories in 10 games, Central Michigan has already surpassed its win total from the 2022 season (4). Central Michigan needs one more victory to become bowl eligible for the third time in four years under Head Coach Jim McElwain.
Central Michigan enters Wednesday's night's game following a 38-28 road loss at rival Western Michigan. Central Michigan battled back from a 14-0 second quarter and 21-7 halftime deficits with touchdowns on three consecutive possessions in the third quarter. The Chippewas led the game 28-21 heading into the fourth quarter, but WMU scored 17 unanswered points to claim the victory.
Quarterback Jase Bauer threw a career-high three touchdown passes and 205 passing yards while completing 14 of 27 attempts and rushing for 40 yards on 10 carries. Running back Marion Lukes rushed for 147 yards and a 17-yard touchdown on 21 carries and totaled 243 all-purpose yards (147 rushing, 11 receiving, 85 on kickoff returns), tight end Mitchel Collier caught a career-high two touchdown passes, and wide receiver Tyson Davis finished with three receptions for 86 yards, including a 67-yard touchdown catch from Bauer. Linebacker Jordan Kwiatkowski led the defense with a career-high 10 tackles, linebacker Dakota Cochran intercepted his first career pass and made a career-high seven tackles, and cornerback Da'Raun McKinney made six tackles and 1.0 TFL.
In its first MACtion game this year, Central Michigan won a 37-31 home victory over Northern Illinois on snowy Halloween Night (Oct. 31). The Chippewas rushed for a season-high 331 yards, 7.0 yards per carry, and tied a season-high with four rushing touchdowns. CMU took a commanding 24-3 halftime lead and held off the visiting Huskies the rest of the way.
Junior running back Marion Lukes led CMU with a career-high 202-yard rushing performance that included a 46-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. Lukes averaged 9.6 yards per carry (21-202 yards) in the game and finished the evening with a career-best 254 all-purpose yards (52 kickoff return yards). For his efforts, Lukes was named the MAC West Division Offenisve Player of the Week. Redshirt sophomore Jase Bauer was responsible for three touchdowns, on the evening including runs of nine and one yards respectively, and threw for another touchdown on a 20-yard pass to Mitchel Collier. Bauer finished with 106 rushing yards of his own, his third career 100-yard rushing performance, and completed nine of 16 passes for 116 yards and a touchdown.
Even though Northern Illinois accumulated 506 yards of total offense, CMU's defense held the Huskies to an incredible 0-10 on third down conversions. With NIU driving, CMU's Nahree Biggins intercepted a pass to seal the victory.
With the win, CMU improved to a perfect 4-0 at home and snapped a three-game Northern Illinois win streak in the series.
NOVEMBER SUCCESS
Since 2019, Central Michigan has closed out seasons successfully under Head Coach Jim McElwain as the Chippewas sport a 12-4 record in the month of November.
Central Michigan went 3-0 in 2019, 3-1 in 2020, 4-0 in 2021, finished 2-2 in 2022, and are 0-1 now in 2023.
Previously, the Chippewas won seven straight games in the month of November under McElwain up until last year's 2022 loss to Western Michigan. The Chippewas closed out the 2022 season with a road loss at Eastern Michigan.
CMU-OHIO SERIES
Central Michigan and Ohio meet for the 35th time in series history.
• Central Michigan enters its Wednesday game with a 27-5-2 all-time record vs. Ohio dating back to the start of the series 1972.
• Central Michigan has won each of the last six matchups vs. Ohio dating back to 2011.
• CMU has also won each of the last four games played in Athens dating back to a loss in 2000.
• Central Michigan is 12-3-1 all-time in games played in Athens.
• CMU has won nine of the last 10 matchups and 16 of the last 20 matchups (16-3-1).
COMEBACK KIDS
In three of its wins this year, Central Michigan has rallied from behind to register victories.
Against Akron, Central Michigan trailed 3-0 through the majority of the first half before placekicker Tristan Mattson converted a school-record 58-yard field goal to tie the contest going into halftime. CMU scored 17 unanswered points and ended up winning 17-10.
At South Alabama, Central Michigan trailed 14-0 in the second quarter before taking a 20-14 lead with 20 unanswered points. The host Jaguars again took a 30-27 advantage with 2:42 to play, but CMU drove down the field and scored when quarterback Jase Bauer found the end zone on a four-yard run with 13 seconds to play.
In a back-and-forth game against Eastern Michigan, the Chippewas trailed 23-19 when the Eagles scored with 2:14 left in the third quarter. But CMU grabbed the lead 26-23 and held on to register the win.
TURNOVER TURNAROUND
The key to Central Michigan's success this year has been cutting down on turnovers. On the year, and after 10 games, Central Michigan has turned the ball over just 12 times. CMU has lost just two fumble this year, ranks No. 6 in the nation and leads the MAC in that category.
Those numbers are in stark contrast to the 2022 season when the Chippewas ranked No. 128 out of 133 teams in turnovers lost (28 total/18 fumbles lost/10 interceptions), No. 130 in fumbles lost (18) and No. 130 in turnover margin (-1.50).
Central Michigan had gone 14 consecutive quarters through the fourth quarter at Western Michigan without turning the ball over (3-Akron, 4-Ball State, 4-Northern Illinois, 3-Western Michigan). It tied for the longest such long turnover-less quarter streak for the Chippewas this year.
Through its first five games, Central Michigan committed just four turnovers. Even more impressive was the fact that the Chippewas went 14 consecutive quarters with just one turnover and 12 straight quarters without commiting a turnover (last two quarters vs. New Hampshire, four quarters at Notre Dame, four quarters at South Alabama, and two quarters vs. Eastern Michigan).
Against Buffalo, the Chippewas turned the ball over four times (three interceptions, one fumble) leading to 24 Buffalo points and a 37-13 road loss. Against Akron, the Chippewas threw two interceptions and at WMU, CMU fumbled once and threw an interception late in the fourth quarter.
HOME SWEET HOME
With one home game remaining on the schedule (vs. Toledo, Nov. 24), Central Michigan is a perfect 4-0 in home games this year. The last time CMU completed a season with an undefeated home record was during Head Coach Jim McElwain's first year in 2019, when the Chippewas went a perfect 6-0.
Since 1950, CMU has registered 12 undefeated home seasons: 1953 (4-0), 1954 (4-0), 1955 (4-0), 1956 (4-0), 1967 (4-0), 1970 (4-0), 1977 (5-0), 1979 (5-0), 1980 (6-0), 1994 (5-0), 1998 (5-0), and 2009 (5-0).
LUKES ON TEAR
Over the last two games, junior running back Marion Lukes has played two of his best games as he has rushed for 349 yards and two touchdowns on 42 carries, totaled 497 all-purpose yards and caught one pass for 11 yards. In his back-to-back 100-yard rushing games vs. Northern Illinois and Western Michigan, Lukes averaged 174.5 yards rushing and 248.5 all-purpose yards per game.
Against Northern Illinois, Lukes was named the MAC West Division Offensive Player of the Week after rushing for a career-high 202 yards on 21 carries and a 46-yard touchdown and amassing a career-best 254 all-purpose yards. He backed that up with a 147-yard, one touchdown, 243-all-purpose yard game at Western Michigan.
Through 10 games, Lukes leads the Chippewas in rushing yards (609), all-purpose yards (1,381), kickoff return yards (533) and ranks second on the squad in receptions (24). He has scored five total touchdowns (four rushing, one on kickoff returns) and ranks among national leaders in kickoff return touchdowns and combined kick returns.
BAUER EMERGES AS STARTING QUARTERBACK
With several stellar performances, redshirt sophomore Jase Bauer has emerged as Central Michigan's starting quarterback. After a gritty performance in his first start of the year at Notre Dame that kept the Chippewas in the game through three tough quarters, Bauer came off the bench and responded with a breakout performance at South Alabama that saw him lead a CMU comeback twice, score the game-winner, make a block on a key run, and play in a role in scoring five touchdowns (four rushing/one passing). Combine that with his second start of the year against Eastern Michigan that saw him complete 73 percent of his passes (19-26) for 218 yards and a touchdown, Bauer has made an impact in the early-going.
Over the last eight games which included seven starts, Bauer has combined to rush 98 times for 342 yards with nine touchdowns, complete 58.4 percent (135-231) of his passes for 1,522 yards, with seven interceptions and nine touchdown passes, and accumulate 1,833 total yards (229.2 per game).
The statistics don't tell the full story over the last eight games as Bauer has engineered 19 scoring drives of 52 yards or more with eight of those coming on 10 or more plays and two on 18 plays.
CMU IN NATIONAL STATISTICS
After 10 games, Central Michigan finds itself ranked among top-35 national leaders in several statistical categories. The Chippewas rank:
• No. 6, fumbles lost (2).
• No. 11, fourth down conversion percentage (70.6).
• No. 38, turnovers lost (12).
