CMU's Joe Staley Named to Senior Bowl 75th Anniversary Team

Staley earns prestigious honor, will be honored during halftime of the 2024 Reese’s Senior Bowl on Feb. 3, 2024.
MOBILE, Ala.—Former Central Michigan Football and National Football League great Joe Staley was selected to the Senior Bowl's 75th Anniversary Team, the Senior Bowl announced this week. As a member of the 75th anniversary team, Staley will be honored during halftime of the 2024 Reese's Senior Bowl, which will kickoff at noon on Saturday, Feb. 3, 2024. The 75th Anniversary Team selections were made through a process that included a public online fan vote, a poll of all 32 NFL general managers, and consideration from the Senior Bowl's selection committee. The lineup includes 19 Pro Football Hall of Famers, 8 NFL MVP awards, 119 All-Pro 1st-Team selections, 63 All-Pro 2nd-Team selections, 253 Pro Bowl selections, 3 Rookie of the Year selections, 2 Offensive Rookie of the Year selections, 5 Defensive Rookie of the Year selections, 8 NFL Defensive Player of the Year selections, 4 AFC & NFC Defensive Player of the Year selections, and 5 NFL Offensive Player of the Year selections.
An offensive tackle, Staley played for CMU from 2003-06. He displayed a rare bend of size, speed, strength, and athleticism. He served as captain for the 2006 Central Michigan team that won the Mid-American Conference championship, along with the program's first bowl victory. He allowed just one sack in his final two years and earned First Team All-MAC honors during his senior year. A native of Rockford, Mich., Staley appeared in 47 games in a Chippewa uniform, including 11 as a true freshman at tight end.
The San Francisco 49ers took Staley with the No. 28 pick in the first round of the 2007 NFL Draft, marking the highest Chippewas player that had ever been selected. Staley went on to a 13-year NFL career, during which he was named to the All-Pro team three times, voted to the Pro Bowl six times, selected to the NFL 2010 All-Decade Team, and played in two Super Bowls (XLVII and LIV). He started all 181 games that he played in the NFL.
Staley was inducted into the Central Michigan University Marcy Weston Athletic Hall of Fame in 2020.
