Chippewas drop 17-15 loss to Lindenwood in second matchup of the year.
ST. CHARLES, Mo. – Lindenwood scored twice in the final 3:34 on Tuesday in handing Central Michigan a 17-15 loss in a nonconference lacrosse game at Lindenwood's Hunter Stadium.
The Chippewas closed their season-opening road trip 1-1. They defeated Cal, 15-12, on Sunday.
CMU is scheduled to play a nonconference game at Notre Dame on Sunday, Feb. 19 (3 p.m.) and then entertains Butler in its home opener on Friday, Feb. 24.
Audrey Whiteside scored five goals and Maggie Diebold added four to lead the Chippewas, who jumped to a 7-1 lead after one quarter and then were outscored, 9-1, in the second quarter.
CMU trailed, 10-8, to start the third quarter and then got back-to-back goals from Kelly Hoyt to tie it, 10-10. It was the first of 10 second-half ties and neither team led by more than one goal over the final 28-plus minutes.
Lindsay Smith scored unassisted with 3:34 remaining to put Lindenwood in front for good, 16-15. Logann Eldredge added an insurance goal, her game-high sixth score, with 45 seconds to play.
Hoyt finished with three goals for CMU.
Statistically, the game was nearly even. Lindenwood finished with a 36-33 advantage in shots and 24-22 in shots on goal. The ground balls (14-14) and draw controls (18-18) were even.
Alexa Martel and Erin Owens split the game in goal for CMU. Martel made four saves and surrendered 12 goals in 40:51; Owens posted three saves against five goals in 19:09.
