Lacrosse Wins MAC Opener Over Detroit 13-8

Maggie Diebold leads Central Michigan with a season-high six goals; goalkeeper Alexa Martel makes 11 saves; Chippewas claim MAC opener after outshooting the Titans 38-25.
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich.—Central Michigan scored four unanswered goals midway through the game, Maggie Diebold finished with a season-high six goals and goalkeeper Alexa Martel made 11 saves to lead Central Michigan to a 13-8 lacrosse victory over Detroit Wednesday evening at the CMU Lacrosse Complex. The 2022 Mid-American Conference champion CMU improves to 1-0 in MAC play and 3-6 overall, while Detroit drops to 0-1 in the MAC and 1-6 overall.
Central Michigan led the entire way. The Chippewas outshot the Titans 38-25, picked up 20 ground balls to the Titans' 13, and won 17 draw controls to the Titans' seven.
Diebold, who now has 19 goals on the year, scored three of her six goals in the first half as the Chippewas held the Titans at bay. Audrey Whiteside and Makenna Huhn both added two goals and an assist and Kendall Hoyt finished with two goals. Huhn also had a career-high six draw controls.
The Chippewas won their fifth straight game against Detroit dating back to April 27, 2019.
Central Michigan jumped out to a quick start when Kendall Hoyt finished off an unassisted goal just two minutes into the game. The Chippewas made it 2-0 when Maggie Diebold scored at the 7:18 mark.
Detroit answered at the start of the second quarter on a goal by Cat Kopchia, but Central Michigan responded with two Diebold goals in an 11-second span to take a 4-1 lead. She scored on an unassisted shot at the 11:36 mark, then 11 seconds later, she received a pass from Makenna Huhn and sent a shot past the goalkeeper for her third score of the day.
Detroit's Leah Bodnar made it 4-2 on a goal at the 7:25 mark after receiving a pass from Kopchia and the Titans cut the deficit to 4-3 on a Charlotte Dale but CMU seized the momentum heading into halftime with a goal by Makenna Huhn off a pass from Sadie Hinkle.
Central Michigan continued the momentum early in the third quarter as Diebold made it 6-3 CMU when she charged the goal and sent a shot past the Detroit goalie for her fourth of the day. Twenty seconds later Audrey Whiteside collected the draw and drove down the field through the defense for a 7-3 CMU advantage. Later, Whiteside found Kendall Hoyt for her ninth goal of the year and a commanding 8-3 lead. Diebold made it 9-3 with goal No. 5 with 2:27 to play in the third quarter.
The Chippewas added four insurance goals in the fourth period, while Detroit scored the game's final three goals to close the final gap.
