Chippewas outscore Eastern Michigan 9-1 in the fourth quarter; Kelly Hoyt scores five goals and Sarah Hinkle adds a career-high four in the victory.
YPSILANTI, Mich. – Kelly Hoyt scored five goals and Sadie Hinkle finished with four goals and the Central Michigan Lacrosse team took advantage of a nine-goal fourth quarter to defeat Eastern Michigan 17-11 inside of the EMU Indoor Practice Facility on Wednesday morning. The victory moves Central Michigan to 4-6 overall and 2-0 in the MAC, while Eastern Michigan falls to 1-9 and 0-2 in the MAC.
Kelly Hoyt recorded five goals and one assist on the day and Hinkle's four goals marked a new career high for the sophomore. Audrey Whiteside and Kendall Hoyt each had two goals, while Sandy Edwards, Reagan Martinsen, Maggie Diebold, and Amanda Hilderbrandt each added one a piece. Collecting assists on the day were Hinkle (2), Kelly Hoyt, Whiteside, Kendall Hoyt, Edwards, Hilderbrandt, Celia Dow, Makenna Huhn, and Skye Deprado.
Goalkeeper Alexa Martel played all 60 minutes in the crease and recorded 10 saves.
First-year head coach Emilia Ward was excited to see Hinkle get the reward she has been working for.
"It is awesome as a coach to see the hard work an individual is putting in both in and outside of practice pay off," Ward said. "She is a kid who is really hard on herself and to see her grow in her craft as a coaching staff is just fun to see."
The game proved to be a tale of two halves for the Chippewas on the offensive end. At the half, the game was tied 5-5 and was 8-6 at the end of the third in favor of Central Michigan. But the fourth quarter was all CMU as it outscored EMU 9-1.
"Eastern came out hard and put us to the test," Ward said. "They made us do things at a high level to be effective. We made those changes at the half and came out more effective than we were in the first half. We really used our speed to our advantage in the second half and especially the fourth quarter."
Next up, the Chippewas will host senior day at the CMU Lacrosse Complex on Saturday, April 8th as they host MAC opponent Akron. The game is slated for noon and the senior celebration is schedule to happen pregame around 11:40 a.m.
"We are excited to honor this group of seven seniors who have meant so much to the program both on and off the field. We have a lot of season left but it is always special to celebrate them on their home base and with their friends and family."
