Lacrosse Rolls Over Akron, 21-9

Chippewas win third straight game after scoring a season-high 21 goals on Senior Day; Kelly Hoyt leads Chippewas with six goals and three assists and sets school’s single-game record for draw controls (15).
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich.—Led by six goals and three assists from senior Kelly Hoyt, Central Michigan scored a season-high 21 goals as the Chippewas won their third straight game over Ohio, 21-9 Saturday afternoon at the CMU Lacrosse Complex. Hoyt also tallied three assists as CMU ripped out nine unanswered goals in a crucial eight-minute span to claim the win.
CMU's seven seniors were honored in a pre-game ceremony.
The Chippewas surpassed their previous season-high of 19 goals at Duquesne on March 7. Graduate student Maggie Diebold added four scores, while in total eight different CMU players notched at least one goal. Kelly Hoyt set CMU's single-game record for draw controls, winning 15.
With the win, Central Michigan improves to 5-6 overall and 3-0 in Mid-American Conference play. Akron drops to 1-11 overall and 0-3 in the MAC.
Central Michigan outshot Akron 38-18, picked up 17 ground balls to Akron's six, and registered 24 draw controls to Akron's nine. The Chippewas also forced the Zips into making 14 turnovers.
The Chippewas enjoyed their top offensive performance of the year, totaling 21 goals and 15 assists. Kelly Hoyt and Diebold combined to score 10 goals. Audrey Whiteside finished with two goals and four assists, Sadie Hinkle totaled two goals and three assists, Kendall Hoyt contributed two goals and one assist.
Three goalies saw action for Central Michigan and the threesome accounted by five saves. Erin Owens earned the win after starting the contest. Alexa Martel finished with one save and Leila Kahler made her first career appearance and made three saves.
With the score tied at 3-3, Central Michigan went on its 9-0 run. Hinkle started the scoring at the 8:47 mark with a goal off an assist from Amanda Hilderbrandt. Two minutes later Diebold scored on a free position shot, Makenna Huhn followed with a free position shot and Diebold scored after receiving a pass from Hinkle. Reagan Martinsen and Whiteside added back-to-back goals as CMU took a commanding 9-3 lead at the end of the first quarter.
The scoring continued into the second quarter as Kelly Hoyt finished off back-to-back goals and Hinkle made it 12-3 on a free position shot with 12:47 to play in the quarter.
Central Michigan went up 2-0 on goals by Whiteside and Diebold in the game's first three minutes. Kelly Hoyt added a goal to make it 3-1 but Akron charged back to tie the game at 3-3 on back-to-back goals by Katie Baumer and Alexis Kiefer.
From that point, it was all Central Michigan.
Kiefer led Akron with three goals, while Graceann Schwab finished with two scores.
Central Michigan is back in action at Detroit on Saturday at 7 p.m.
